About my work

Most of my paintings are direct, spontaneous and improvisational and are begun as abstractions.

For me, the process of painting is one of surprise and discovery. I also try to exploit the inherent properties of each medium which I am using. In watercolor, it is one of fluidity, transparency and the “happy accident.”

I begin my paintings with a general idea of color and subject matter and they develop as the subject is gradually revealed through shape and color. Any pencil drawing is usually done at a later stage to help define my subject along with negative painting.

Thematically, my subjects are those with which I am familiar… fish, flowers, figures and birds.
